Tonneau?

Post by Danno »

has anybody made a fiberglass tonneau for their fiat? I think it would look pretty cool if done right, and that back seat is pretty much useless anyway!

I looked for pictures for examples, but didn't come up with much here's what i did find to get you thinking though. I'm pretty good with fiberglass, so I don't think this is unreasonable.

Are you thinking of a two piece? A one piece might look good but storing it when you get caught in a downpour might prove difficult.

you know I hadn't really decided. I like the looks of a one piece, but two would be easy to store, but i wonder what options I could come up with that would be like a major fiberglassing effort that would leave a permanent structure in the car for speakers/behind seat storage, etc. Then I could have some structure in there permanently and when I liked I could fold the top down and insert a couple of final covers... does that make sense?

So, you want something to cover the entire rear seat area, like the ones in the pics, and also a way to have the top fold down into it? A hinged piece at the rear where the top actually folds down might work, but would have to fit over the rear window scraper moldings, then I don't know what it would look like inside with the top up. You could remove the hooks on the back valance and use some kind of latch to secure it. Don't know, just a thought.

Mark you sneaky devil, you don't even mention this stuff when you are making it!?!?! At least you brought it up on Mira....

This is exactly what I'd like. Price is a little much (right now) but maybe someday. I'm sure I could do it myself cheaply, but the labor involved is no minor thing, and it would probably take me a year of weekends before a painted version was seen....

funny, I was just getting ready to post here. I put it on Mira and FC first, only since FS was down over the weekend. Here is the link to the slideshow. This is the prototype piece and prelim price could end up in the $499 range. If quantities are decent the price will be lower. Let me know what you think.

I thought about building one myself My mother in law just bought a saturn sky and they look really nice with the tonneau a retractable hard top would be my next brain storm like the new Mazda miata has.
