Cold Air Intake

Post by Leesfer »

Does anyone know of a good setup for a cold air intake for the 82 fiat spider?

is there a kit sold or will I have to custom build this? Or is it possible to drill holes into the air box and if so, is it a good idea?

If you look down the page @''powerstack free flow kit '' there is a discussion on these setups. I bought a nice kit from a fellow member ,Gus Zeisman. It is a nice setup made just for f.i. Spiders. It is less than $100 w/ a K&N cone filter. He will send you info and pix; fiatman@comcast.net. Tell him Craig sent you ,He's gonna owe me a bunch of beer at FFO.

Can someone explain to me the idea behind this conversion? I think that it is for ease and looks more than any real function. I look at the small square inlet and outlet on the airflow meter and think the old filter had more than enough volume to produce air for the airflow meter. I think this allows one to remove the bracket on the fender. But this new filter is more apt to draw in warmer engine air then the old system. I know the airflow meter has a temp. probe in front of the gate that measures the temp of the air coming in, so keeping the air as cold as possible would be a priority. It seems that with the K&N filter being on the exhaust side, it has more of a change of drawing in more warm air than the previous solution, which may not be the best solution, but I think better than the new retrofit. Is there something I am missing?

if I was to get one if these kits. Would simply have a custom hose extend the intake lower and further from the exhaust

 Hi my fellow Fiat Freaks
I have what you are looking for all in :!: ONE :!: great kit no need to fabricate anything.
Make your Fiat's engine bay look awesome & improve air flow at the same time. Go from the original flat FI air filter configuration to a cone filter with this kit. Kit includes the air flow mounting bracket, filter mounting flange and hardware to secure the AFM to the bracket. What is NOT included is the filter element & gasket (between AFM & filter mounting flange). The gasket can be made from senor safe liquid gasket compound. It is designed to use the K&N RR-28 series cone filter element however any filter will work providing the inlet flange is 2.75" & close to the RR-28 dims..
The mounting bracket is laser cut from 3/16" thick steel, formed & powder coated gloss black. Structurally over designed for the application.
The filter mounting flange is fabricated from aluminum plate & tube, certainly a quality piece.
Several have bought the kit and said they liked it VERY much. The quality is GREAT. The application is simple and different from the "other performance staks" on the market. It doesn't require the use of the headder heat shield stud to secure the AFM
The cost for all this FUN is ONLY $46.00 + shipping
If you would like one so you will be ready for the Spring please let me know & I will send you a photo & ship info (about a 5# carton from zip 17408).
Thanks much Gus

Pope has got a good point... is the increased air intake worth the downfall of having to take in that warm air?

being that the original air box took in air from down below...

Is there a big different between cool and hot air when the K-N filter is used?, mine gets very hot, but what if I can used this filter K-N filter and get cool air instead of hot, will I get any improvement, instead of just looks?

it,s really a big difference , when i put mine on i could feel a decrease in power when the engine was hot.Especially when idling for a wile at the traffic lights and then driving away.So i made a heatshield and my own cold air intake :D and it works fantastic the engine has much better gas response now , even a bit better than original, and the sound from that thing is awesome :D

Stefan, that is a excellent idea for the heat shield.I have been playing with ideas for one,but they have looked clumsy.Your blends into the engine compartment nicely. Is that stainless steel or aluminum? I am going to build something similar. Nice work

thank you for the compliment :D
it wasn't that much work, i took a piece of aluminium that i had , folded it, took a bit of the corners, drill a few holes, and put it in place.i used the original threads the airfilter was mounted on. that's all

Thanks,Stephan.I had been trying to use a 'surround' type shield from a Mustang(I think). It looked too big for the compartment.Sometimes simpler is much better!

I bought this filter with the intention of cutting a hole like Stefan, but later chickened out and just removed the front hood seal. A 4" hose can be attached to duct in cool air.
