Folks, What have people done to wire an amp in the trunk? Specifically, it looks like the metal behind the back seat and the metal in the trunk are not one and the same sheet of metal. I can only guess that this gap (no sure how big) is part of the structural support design. I've been considering drilling a 1" inch hole in both metal support walls to run cables and speaker wire through and the sealing it with a rubber grommet and some silicone. As for the location of the hole, I was thinking about an inch up on the wall to the right of the battery box. This would be at the same height as the + batter cable hole only 18 inches or so to the right.
Thoughts?

You shouldn't need to drill any holes if you just fish the wires through the same place as the wiring harness. There is a gap in the fender wells near the bottom where the sheet metal attaches and it can be fished through the same location. At least that is what I did in my '81 Spider.

on the far right or left side theres room for wires
inside, behind the trim, above the rear seat on both sides theres a tunnel

How did you get the wires past the plastic liner? The one in the area where the convertible top folds into, next the the rear seat. Not the quarter panels right next to the seat, but the one behind it, that basically covers the inside of the fender.Ragno124 wrote:You shouldn't need to drill any holes if you just fish the wires through the same place as the wiring harness.

It's been several years since I did this, but I recall I was able to use an electrician's fish tape to push from the trunk side down the fender well and it just pushed right through. I don't recall any problems at all with this. I ran wires on both sides including new wires for my aftermarket electric antenna, the amp, and the cross-overs I mounted on each side of the battery box. All wires are routed next to the factory wiring harness under the carpet.vandor wrote:How did you get the wires past the plastic liner? Drill baby drill... Well, I drilled a slot 1/2" X 1" and rounded the edges in. Used some black wire loom and clear silicone to seal the holes. looks pretty good. I'll dress it up a little and post a pic. I tried fishing the wires in other areas but the RCA wires were just too thick to make it through these seems. Oh well!!

I have run wires over the rear wheel well and it comes out between the plastic inner panel and outter side wall of the car. You can remove all of the plastic and retrieve the wiring and run it through the V groove in the botom of the plastic panel running it under the rear seat or from that point run it along the seat under the carpet. I have retrieved the wire by loosing the panels and fishing the wire. You do not need to drill any holes!

I mounted a piece of aluminum vertically, at the front-most face of the spare tire well. It extends above the floor and I mounted my amp to that. Works well. Amp is out of the way, accessible, etc. I have photos, let me know if you want me to e-mail to you.
