Charge light on, alternator gets hot

Hey Guys,
Just bought this car, first Fiat for me. Its a 1978 124 Spider and I've got a problem with the car. When I turn the key all the way off, the charge light comes on even with the key out of it and the alternator gets hot. When the car is running, the charge light is off, but the battery is definitely not charging. When the car is off and the key in the run position, the light is off and the alternator is cold. Any ideas?
