EGR Valves

I have seen some people remove the EGR valves and replace them with bolts. Does this hurt the car?

no, removing the valve won't hurt the car providing you seal up the passages so that you don't create a vacuum leak

One of the things the EGR does is cool down the combustion temps and pressures. OK that's two things.
If you remove the valve the engine is more likely to ping, which can damage things.

in the early days of egr, it was used to reduce Nox. Introducing exhaust gas to the intake charge to control pinging is a sure way to lose lots of power, and egr will drop fuel mileage about 10%.

While EGR does cost some power at part throttle, at WOT the valve does not function (no vacuum) thus no loss of power when you really want it.
Cars prior to EGR valves were designed to function without one.

Back in the '70s many "mechanics" would stick bb's into the EGR vacuum line so the car would run better at cruise. Then, yup, they would ping. Then they would back the timing off to control the pinging, which results in less power, and less mileage.

You can certainly remove valve, or just plug hose to see how it goes. Car may run smoother at cruise, and it may ping under load too. One way to find out....

Interesting. Never heard that one before. I figured if anything an EGR valve would cause an engine to ping because it dumps hot exhaust gasses back into the combustion chamber. Or at least that's what I thought it did.

I removed the air pump (as well as most of the other smog related parts) on my 1980 131 and swear I can hear a ping under heavy load. The static timing is set at 10 BDTC. This shouldn't happen but I suspected it could be old gas. So I ran the tank as low as I felt comfortable and topped it off with fresh fuel and the pinging seems to be gone.

egr cools the combustion temperature by diluting the fuel charge with exhaust gas. Many mfgs used it to control detonation as well as lowering Nox. It does hurt part throttle performance and fuel mileage.
