Jeep TJ Bumper Blocks

Post by natesky »

Thought I'd share my low-budget-yet-functional Abarth-ish bumper blocks.

http://handbuilt-by-robots.blogspot.com ... umper.html

Short story is. Jeep TJ Bumper overriders/blocks (whatever we call them) fit pretty well IMHO. If you look carefully you'll note that I did mount them upside down to how they are mounted on Jeeps. (the shape is more raked on the bottom so it looks better IMHO.

EDIT: 'project' cost was about $30 for blocks from Ebay.

the size looks about right for the car, have you thought about collapsing the shocks to get the block closer to the body?

I think Mark is right, those blocks might look better snuggly setting on the body.

Great right up! Thanks for sharing.

I have been thinking about collapsing them. However since we have safety inspections for cars under 35 in NC I need to be able to remount my 'proper' bumper once a year (unless I find a shop willing to pass my blocks as 'bumpers'.

Another reason is that I wonder if the shock wouldn't be somewhat useful if I did need them (knock on veneer). Looking at the mounts though.. I'm not sure how useful they'd be in practice.

front shocks were a breeze to pull out. NOT a fan of the look you have there. looks weird. I think you are on to something with those rubber blocks as an alternative to the abarth ones though. Next thing you need is the "universal" fender flares that you can get from JcWhitney and places like that. If you've seen the 4x4 spider pics before he has fender flares on it and while the whole thing looks rediculous, those don't. He told me they were universal ones found at JcWhitney. There are several choices and I wanted someone else to be the guinea pig so I don't have to figure it out on my own! lol.

I did try them without the shocks.. didn't like it and they certainly held no functional value (the bonnet sticks out farther).

I was going to try to find a picture to 'prove' they don't look that bad.. no luck :). I will say I think they look better in person and in case of a minor collision where they did impact the other car's bumper (big if) they would protect the car from damage (kinda the point anyway right..).

what are you doing for turn sigs/pk lts?

Still working on that.

I thought cobra-style round signals on the front would look good. Factory five sells them at a reasonable price ($30 each). I would make a metal insert that just fit in the quasi-square openings (but 'aimed' so the lights point ahead), paint it to match and then mount the lights to that.

Otherwise I thought of adding round lights inside the upper grill opening..

Any suggestions would be welcome. Keep in mind that I need to be able to 'undo' anything in case I sell it or etc.

thanks!

Here's one, mocked up, idea. These are running light/turn signals from later Jeep CJ's. (saw a CJ in the parking lot and ordered a couple)

I don't think they work here, think they'll be going back. Any opinions?

They are too big to go in the holes for the OEM turn signal wires. and wouldn't look right even if I made them fit.

Its the internal designation given to the 97-05 generation of Jeep Wrangler. So far since Jeep was incorporated there have been CJ->YJ->TJ and now the JK with the 2006+ gen. Unlike many other cars, the Jeep's platform codes are commonly used (among owners/etc.)

Those mocked grill lights are EXACTLY what I want to do for driving lights. What size are those puppies?

I ran into a possible solution for turn signals when the front bumper is removed in a custom rodding mag. The turn signal is molded into the lower section of the head light . I also saw them on a rabbit on another site and they looked pretty good and easy to install.
