ADF 34 install and plan
ADF 34 install and plan
I have read that while not optimum the 34 will work on the dual plane manifold fine. Because I am having trouble locating a 1800 manifold, I am thinking of installing a 34 on my stock 79 manifold and then add the proper manifold when I find one. Any problems with this? Will more adjustment be needed to make the 34 run on the dual plane? My car currently has an aftermarket electric pump that is noisy. I am thinking of going back to stock mechanical. Good idea or no?
Re: ADF 34 install and plan
Is the electric pump in the trunk or engine bay? Electric fuel pumps are push devices and are designed to be located close to the fuel tank.
Re: ADF 34 install and plan
Under the hood. Wonder if that could be part of a current problem -- the car runs fine most of the time but hesitates and wants to die at times. Haven't been able to determine a consistent set of conditions when this happens.
Re: ADF 34 install and plan
Having an electric fuel pump in the engine bay over works them so they wear out more quickly.
Instead of the 34 you could go with a 32/36 DFEV. That's what I run on my 1980 with a stock manifold. World of difference in performance. Weber Direct has them for under $200.

Yeah the 34 will work on the stock manifold but the primary intake port on the stock manifold is 28mm so your performance will suffer. On the 1800 manifold there is no restriction on the intake. Did you look hard for a manifold? Midwest bayless has reconditioned ones for about $130 or so and many pop up here. The 1800 manifold is much better for the 34 carb. I've heard that an electric fuel pump is overkill on a carb motor because the intake fuel flows at a low pressure.

Re: ADF 34 install and plan
mecanical pumps are 4psi
most ele pumps are 35psi for FI
however presure regulators can bring it down
and theres low presure ele pumps as well

Re: ADF 34 install and plan
Thanks all. I'm feeling more and more like my current problem is the fuel pump. Gonna try a mechanical one (have one on order from IAP) and see. Will extend my craigslist search for a manifold to other cities. Maybe I can find a yard that will ship one.
Re: ADF 34 install and plan
I have switched an ADF 34 to a dual plane manifold on a 79 was a good improvement power wise most of
of the improvement is from the larger venturi on the secondary over the stock carb . About the manifold
not working properly it's a myth most people who say this stuff havent tried the switch over on a stock
engine . If your running a modified engine with larger cams pistons headers etc you'll want the 1800
manifold and possibly a larger carb the 1974 1800 manifold is the best .

Re: ADF 34 install and plan
Well I got a new 34 ADF in the mail today. Two problems. One of the connections for the water choke was completely broken off. Does the unit from the stock carb interchange with this? Two, no distributor vacuum advance connection this carb. What do people usually do about this? I see some have drilled one in but I've never done something like this. What's the best course of action? Do most people tap a connection into the base of the carb or do they go with ignition/distributor change that would do away with the need for the vacuum line?
Re: ADF 34 install and plan
Or do I just set initial timing at 20 instead of 10? I saw a suggestion on Mirafiori's archive that suggested that.
Re: ADF 34 install and plan
If you purchased the carb from a vendor I would tell them about the problem with the water choke connection being completely broken off. They should pay for return shipping.
Here is a good thread on the ADF. The thread mentions that Pierce Manifold can do the drilling for vacuum advance for you.

Re: ADF 34 install and plan
I was going to let the vendor know but was also thinking I could have the carb back sooner if I just replaced the part. Or maybe have Pierce fix both issues.
Re: ADF 34 install and plan
On the other hand am thinking seriously of just returning the carb and going with a 32/36 DFEV from weber carbs direct. Is that carb jetted correctly for Fiat 2000s?
Re: ADF 34 install and plan
Not sure what my mechanic did with my 32/36 DFEV out of the box but mine is tuned for high altitude with stock dual plane manifold and 4-1 exhaust. Night and day difference in the car performance.
