smooth look lower sill panel mod...

Post by v6spider »

This is neat trick I learn how to do on my first spider. If you cut the backside of the panel it will fit flush with the body. I never cared for the bolt-on look of the rear corners and door sills. So I have welded them in place after rust proofing.

Pretty nifty. Are you doing any other mod's. I thought you wanted to keep it stock on the outside.

No just not wanting to allude to what lurks under the hood...here's the mods to the rear...Image
basically I want the out side to show off the natural body lines.I didn't like the lip that is hidden by the rear bumper. When going bumperless I found the lip to be a detraction, so I removed it also. I want the body to be smooth and sleek...

Devil is in the details Rob!

I love it!

I'm trying to decide what I want to do for taillights on my own project. I've found what may be a good soltion.... and it is not entirely dissimilar to what you've fdone. As a means of sizing: can yu tell me how big (diameter) the holes youve made for your taillights are?
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

Man I love seeing others custom work. Can I have your link to photobucket to keep up with your work Rob and Maytag?
Or whatever album your using. Mine is below my signature.
Thanks guys

Ive seen this once before. Bought a car locally on ebay for my girlfriends sister. When we went to pick it up the lower side panels were tucked like this. They werent welded though. It still had the stainless and was still bolted on. It looked good and the guy tried to sell me on the story that it was factory, a limited thing. There was to much else about the car that didnt add up, so after alot of arguing we walked awaY with a refund. I always liked the way it looked, and thought about going that route someday. Its was totally forgotten till I saw your mod.

Maytag: I am using 2 1/2" marker lights that have been modified to accept regular 2 wire bulbs. The back-up lights are white super bright LED's that are in the center of the inner taillights. The body holes for the lights are made out of 2 1/2" exhaust connectors. See this post

Brady: I don't have my photo album setup yet.... However, I think I will be doing that sooner. I will keep everyone posted. I am a web developer and spend lots of time working on websites other than my own... ;)

On the whole it is nice to see my vision starting to take shape. I wish I was better at welding than i am at times. I have lots of ideas, but I get discouraged when my welds don't meet my standards. For the most part, switching to argon/CO2 shielding gas was a big improvement. I think it is the best gas for welding thin metal and the spider's body is pretty thin in comparison to other cars I have welded on.

I am glad that people seem to like what I am doing with my mods. The more work I get done the more excited I get about seeing the finished product.. 8)

Happy Fourth!
