Muffler opinion

I've been driving myself crazy the last couple days trying to decide what muffler i should get to replace the ugly cherry bomb my dad installed about 10 years ago. Since I'm going bumperless most available replacements stuck out to far from the car for my taste. I really wanted to get a Supersprint or ANSA or authentic European muffler but the price and availability is a little silly. So here's one I like. I have a Megan Racing muffler on my MazdaSpeed Protege and they look great. I worry a little when it says its "quiet" but perhaps that's not really a bad thing. Hindsight is 20/20! Anyway, here is a link. Love to know what you guys think!

Nicely constructed for sure... quiet is as important as flow. I hate the tincan sound of the aftermarket honda type mufflers. I hope it is not like one of those...

For $130 of my limited budget I really hope so to. The insynerator everyone is so keen on sells for $25 on Amazon. I can't imagine the sound could be much different. I'll likely pull the trigger on this one and I'll post at least a sound clip for all to decide.

I like to feel it more than hear it.. basically a low-end rumble that barks a little when you romp on it... which the V6 I am using has that potential more so than a 4 cylinder...
If you use a muffler tip like a true Monza tip in conjuction with a good quality muffler the tone is much better in my opinion. I am considering dual flowmasters with monza tips 2 1/2" exhaust. My engine is a 4.3L Chevy V6.

Don't care for the Chainsaw sound of most of 'RICEGRINDER' aftermarket type mufflers... LOL

I had a single cherrybomb (20"), it was way too loud to be happy with for a long trip! my girlfriend at the time had bags of earplugs for vancouver-kelowna trips! It turns out some glasspacks have perforations that are like a cheese grater (cherrybomb) and they apparently can really affect the flow potential, there are other straight-through budget glasspacks that offer better performance (no intrusion into exhast flow) like the Thrush glasspacks and they make them up to a 40" length in the 21/2" size and a 30"length in the 21/4, I am ditching my current exhaust for a 21/2" and plan on running the 40" glasspack beside the tranny and then leave an option for an additional silencer after the differential if this proves too loud.

Laugh all you want, the cherrybomb gave a very agressive (not honda-ee) racecar sound, I wish the output was as badass as the sounds coming from the pipe!

A glasspack muffler has probably the worst potential for flow and very loud... the flowmaster muffler will give you an aggresive tone that you seek without being too loud or hindering performance... yes they are more money but totally worth it.

I just looked at their site, so maybe im wrong, not all are glasspacks, it looks like two are, the rest are chambered muffs....its an old wives tale that straight-through glasspacks are restrictive...there is no logic to that.

I'd like to thank everyone for responding to this thread. Im still not 100% sure on the muffler yet but unless its the only thing I want to do to the car this year it will have to be on the cheaper side. A real full exhaust a little later. As stated my main concern is replacing the old glasspack that sticks out past the bumper as once i remove the bumpers it would look terrible. Monza tips you say? More searching is in order i suppose.
Of possible interest to a bigger spender than I, check out the Stebro exhausts. They make a full kit for the spider. I was quoted $350 for just the muffler section. Unfamiliar with the company but they also make a lot of Ferrari and Lambo and Alfa exhausts.

Flowmaster mufflers are all of a chambered design using sound cancelling technology. The design actually increases horsepower over most designs... especially a glasspack...a 2 1/2 inch diameter glasspack on most designs has a 2" internal diameter. There has been tests done on dynos showing comparisons between turbo mufflers glasspacks and other designs...I think they also have db levels as well...interesting stuff.. the muffler I am considering is their ht2. It looks like a glasspack but it is a chambered design. And sounds good with dual exhaust.

Hi Rob, not to beat a dead horse but i totally disagree. If you look at most "race" type mufflers or even the ansa that is on my fiat (old 74'), they are just a straight-through design that may or may not be split up - there is nothing in the pathway to reduce flow, I do agree that some glasspacks do actually reduce internally to force absorbtion, these are not the ones that I am talking about. The stock fiat abarth pictures in crofts book is a straight-through glasspack also.

They are louder though, thats why im going to try a longer one.

124ADDHE: No worries! For one we are talking about two different exhaust systems... one for the TC and one for my 4.3 V6... The dual exhaust is inheritly louder so right out of the gate glasspacks won't work in my situation. I'll be stopped by the local police quicker than you can say 'ut oh!'...I used to run them on my 72 nova and got stopped seval times for being too loud...clearly the police have nothing better to do. So yeah that is one reason... I had a few friends with flowmaster exhaust systems and was pretty impressed with the sound, durability and performance. So the glasspack may be a better choice in your situation.
