Seat improvements anybody?

Post by kensmith »

Anybody change their seats or install different ones? I ask as I have a long body and while driving my eye level is too close to the top of the windshield. I need to lower my seats or find some that sit lower? Thanks

ken I am using seats out of a 89 firebird - black cloth buckets. I had to modify the seat rails in order to get them to work... I have a set of 96 Honda Prelude seats and I was hoping they would work as well but the seats are too wide and have to much stuff underneath to clear the frame support that is under the seats... :(

I remember reading on mirafiori.com about 10 years ago that the honda civic seats from the late 90's fit quite easily and are nicely supportive, not sure if they sit lower though, maybe you can find it in their archives...

I just got a pair of seats out of an old mercury cougar that work pretty well. They dont sit you any lower though. I think they are out of a 99, and they are not a straight bolt in. the driver side seat is an electric one, and when you take the sliders off of it, the motors all go too. Its going in the passenger side, and the passenger seat is going in the driver side. They do run into the roll bar a bit, but they seem pretty comfortable, and they sit me in just the right position (I'm 5'10") I'll post some pics when i get them installed all the way.

Ken:
they are a little lower only because i took the stock mounts clear out of the car then modified the seat rails on the fire bird seats so that they would sit as low as possible. I then added a 1" square tubing support to the floor pan for the front support so the seat would have the right angle. the support also stiffens the framework at the same time.
The photo shows the front mount. The behind the stock brace the dished part of the floorpan was replaced with a flat panel

I'll post a pic of the seats and the modifications to them tomorrow I'll have to shoot a photo of them. You can probably see them on http://www.v6spider.com in v6spider 1.0. I am having them recovered in the same black material upholstery material. I am also doing the door panels in the same pattern and cloth for version 2.0.

It's actually Honda CRX seats that fit well, but so do Miata seats and they are more available these days. Fiero seats also fit, but those cars have pretty much all been crushed by now. A plus to the Miata seats is that they had optional speakers in the headrests.

Here's a better shot of the floorpan mods ... the dished portion was replced by a flat panel allowing use of different seat rails...Image

I put Fiero seats in my 65 Corvette. Recovered them in leather. Way better than the stock Corvette seats. I'll have to measure the height and see if they are any shorter than the Fiat seats.
