Limited slip differential?

Post by coise »

Does anybody knows where I can find this type of differential. I have a friend in France with a lancia who has one, he told me a limited slip differential make a big difference on handling.

Any input would be welcome, thanks a lot in advance!

phantom grip makes a "kit" that fits in the stock carrier, I doubt it works as well as a real limited slip, though. Then again, the stock rear probabily won't last long with decent power any a locker anyway?

I really don't see this cAR benefiting from a limited slip. Until you're finding that you have too much power to get it to the ground.... there's little point, really. And I should think you'd be breaking alot of other things befor ethat becomes an issue with our little car.
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

I know my car can definatly use one, it breaks the tires easily. Most really wouldnt benefit though unless driving in the rain.

You´re probably right Maytag, but it depends how you drive and how you take your U curve in the montain. I had my spider losing grip on quit a few U curves in the alpes (bumpee and old SMALL roads). Specially when you have to go down to 2 or 3th gear while keeping your engine revving at 4 or 5000 RPM.

I have been interested in this as well for the exact reason Coise mentioned, leaving tight corners on winding mountain roads in 2nd or 3rd.

The Turbo124.com crowd has mentioned a Mazda Van rear end, early RX7 rear end and a toyota truck rear end as possible swaps into 124 coupes. These swaps will be for the complete rear end with the FIAT bracketry welded on to the new rear end. The result would theoretically provide a stronger rear end assembly with LSD. This may be possible into a Spider.

I have also read of a BMW E21 IRS rear end being installed in a 131 as an upgrade to the rear suspension as well as LSD.

Unfortunately these are all internet conjecture as I have not come across a descriptive site detailing the conversion.

I would look to the toyota unit as the first choice as the aftermarket is fairly large and range of factory components should be fairly large. Also, junkyard pricing and availability should be attractive.

Not sure if this is the kind of information you were looking for or not.

let us know how you get on,

Thanks burgandy81, I think you understood what I meant  .
On my side, I´m still looking for LSD like the one in the pics because it´s an easy upgrade ( a bit expensive) and apparently once you´ve tried it you won´t go back to any else. For the kind of Rally driving that we do in the alpes it´s suppose to be one of the best. The only better upgrade I can see would be an Abarth rear end but the price is just crazy  .
Keep me informed on your progress if you find any more info on the possible swaps.

I too have been pondering whether to install a lsd. Though I have a lot of work to do before I get to that point. You might want to check out this site: http://www.ladaworld.com/product_info.p ... ucts_id=47. They say this Torsen LSD will only work in early axles.

Let me know how it works if you get one installed :D

WOOW!
That´s exactly what I was looking for. I checked the web site and if the drawing is right, it fits our rear end. Did you take a look a the curves? That look great...
I will keep you posted if I buy the LSD or not.
Thanks for all the great input guys.
