Fresh air intake

I've got a 1980 which i'd like to add more fresh air intake to. Short of cutting holes in the cowl to duplicate the earlier models, I'm contemplating creating a short fiberglass (maybe carbon fiber) scoop to sit over top of the inatke just in front of the windshield. Anyone done anything like this?

You could buy my stainless shield and put like a k&N filter on the end. You can cut a hole in the front of the filter and cold air can come in through the front. It wouldn't be noticeable.

I am anticipating making some thing out of alluminium that will fit in between the bonnet (hood) and the front of the radiator to channel in cold air. As I am going megasquirt, I will be getting rid of the AFM but also replace the current airbox to one of a Toyota corolla 2002 model. I will post when I get it done but it is on my millenium to do list.....

Steve, Is your 1980 carbed or fuel injected?

i guess i should clarify a bit. this is for the passenger compartment incoming air, not the motor fresh air.

the area at the base of the windshield is already a high pressure area. dont think putting a scoop there would be of any benefit other than screwing up the airflow over the windshield.

How about just opening the vent windows, that's exactly what they are designed for

Or stick your head out of the window, like my dog does????? The side quater windows work well enough for me.

If it's too hot in the cabin, why not put a heat shield on the floors and fire wall.

Yet another reason to buy an old Spider; extra footwell vents! Maybe you could retrofit these to your model year? Anybody done this?

quarter windows... funny. but they dont' like to stay open at 80+ mph
head out the window... at 6' 4", that part is cool enough.
retrofit old dampers - been thinking about that... my 1969 Mustang has those... Love 'em, want 'em, need 'em...
heat shield, done that.. feet are still way too toasty...(and no, no headers etc that should be making that area that hot.)

If any one has clean (e.g. not rusty) foot well cans ... i'm interested... might cut em in.

in the mean time.. i'm playing with a wood form, fiberglass and vaccum bagging....
1st attempt was very nearly usable...

might be a good product for those who live under pine trees or have leaky vent areas....

You need to remove the vent window assembly from the door and tighten the nut on the bottom of the pivot. It will then stay open at any speed.
