How much can you reface a 2.0 engine head in order to get more compression?

I just tossed it and used an 1800 head. No mods necessary, just bolt it up.

What kind of gains would be achieved by running a 1800 head.

In the 2004 summer issue of Ricambi was the best and most complete information was presented by actual measurements and then calculated results of all combinations of heads, blocks, and pistons for the 124 TC engine. With a 8.1 stock ratio, a 1800 head on a two liter block produced 8.53 ratio. Adding 1800 pistons with 1800 head in a two liter block gives 8.65 ratio. After that you have to "deck" (mill) the block. Being carefull for interference you may get almost another point. This has to be done carefully so the piston does hit the head. I hope this helps. See Csaba Vandors write up on his engine.

Is this a FI head or carb'd head? Regardless I was told once upon a time 20 thou would be max to take off the head. I'd suspect some have taken more off and also decked the head, but I understand one then should be looking at adjustable cam wheels to keep everything in sync.
Rey is right in that a 1800 head just bolts on and can give a compression boost. Gains by itself might not be that apparent but start dressing the head and cams and lightened flywheel and headers and.... THEN you'll notice a difference.
I recently dropped a stock 1800 head on a stock 2L FI and I noticed a wee bit but if it was your first time driving it I don't believe it would have made your eyes open any more than normal.
