changing to FI
changing to FI
question of the day I have a 79 spider that had a carb, changing to FI Do I need to replace the fuel line from the tank to the fuel rail? Can I use the exsisting tank I have? Can I use a externial fuel pump? any suggestions on the fuel pump. I am tired of the crappy carb I have on it now and ready to do the deed. I would like to go to dual carbs in the future I'm just a little consirned about dealing with hooking them up and getting them correct.
Re: changing to FI
your carb tank isn't set up very well for a high pressure pump. The oem FI tank has a larger feed line to the pump to ensure good fuel supply. Those electric pumps don't create much suction, so asking it to draw fuel through a 5/16 feed line is not the best scenario

Re: changing to FI
A head and intake/carb swap would help alot. A good exhaust system will help even more. Changing to FI I think is a bit much but doable. I believe the FI and carb heads are different as well.Swapping some bolt on improvements is the way to go, imo

Re: changing to FI
I've started the process, the head from the 79 has been replaced with one from a 78. The exhaust is already set up with the sensor already in it. It came from a 80 that was FI along with all the FI parts I have. I may have to replace the fuel rail. I saw one on E-Bay with the fuel injectors really cheap. I guess I need a new tank with new lines and a fuel filter. I just printed the complete guide off line for the fuel injection for this car. I think I'm on my way. The rear end from this car came from an automatic does that mean its geared a little higher?
Re: changing to FI
auto rear gear was 3.58 as opposed to 3.90 for manual in 79. 78 used a 4.30 rear gear
Re: changing to FI
The lower the number the better I take it. or lower revs and higher MPH ?

Re: changing to FI
A higher number rear end will give you faster acceleration. The engine will also run faster going down the road at the same speed.

Then I have the right one no need to change it thanks. I just down loaded this fiat guide to fuel injection its really nice and clear very well done its a PDF by Brad Artigue. The only thing it doesn't say what size fuel line goes to the fuel rail, is it steel or rubber? I've played with the carb and got the idle down to about 1200 it just needs alot of adjusting. I am looking forward to putting in the FI
Re: changing to FI
Hi lamborghinikid,
I converted my 79 Auto to FI and manual trans. The "fuel feed" line to the Fuel Rail is 5/16 metal with 5/16 rubber at both ends. One of the rubber ends is in the engine compartment, the fuel hose screws into the fuel rail. The other end exits under the rear seat and the hose connects to the fuel filter. For the fuel return line you will need a 5/16 line. The 79s come with a 5/16 & 1/4 metal lines so you can use one of those and swap out the 1/4 line with the 5/16 line from your parts car. A lot easier if you take the drivers seat and carpet out.
If you have anymore questions just let me know.

Re: changing to FI
That can be done. Thanks I have a 32 adfa carb right now it would be nice to find a PDF on tunning it and a picture of where and to what all the hoses comming off of it go to. Its kind of funny I've started getting the parts together to do this FI converson and the carb must know its getting replaced because its runnung better. It will probly go bad on me when I'm somewhere far from home just for a pay back. I've looked every where for info on the tuning of this carb and a pic, of where the lines hook to but found nothing any info would be greatly appreciated
