CHEAP cone filter adapter option!

Postby thewired1 » Wed Apr 19, 2017 5:17 pm

So I realized the plastic lower portion of my air filter box was cracked to hell and the filter inside was basically useless. Apparently the PO never addressed and debris has been entering for some time. The cost to replace the entire box was more than I wanted to spend. I was looking into cone filter adapters and noticed a cheap option on eBay.

Just search for "RED Cone Dry Filter + AIR INTAKE MAF Adapter Kit" and look for one with a rectangular plate.

For under $15 you get a 3" adapter, a plate, and a cone filter! I'm not saying the filter is super-duper high quality but being standard 3", you have a ton of replacement options down the road. This total kit was easily the cheapest way to fix this issue and an improvement IMHO.

Too late in the evening to take a photo of it installed but it looks exactly like this.

I'm a little confused here. There seems to be no top to the filter.
Doesn't air just flow right down the middle of the filter assembly
without going through the filter material?
Or am I missing something ?
Or is just one more use for "Duck Tape"?

Here's a pic of it installed. Please pardon the engine bay mess! I just got her and haven't gotten to cleanup yet.

The only catch-22 is the lack of a support bracket. I currently have it resting on the remains of the lower filter assembly. I need to hit Lowes to get some materials to make a quick bracket.

Regarding the top; there is a recessed cap further in. I'll take another photo today.

There is a second inverted cone filter inside the center hole to give it better airflow and about 50% additional filter material. Better quality replacement filters from Spectre should be available though most local auto parts stores.

I use the Spectre for the diesel in my 78.

Here's mine. I had to shoe horn it in there because of the turbo.

I built this system myself except for the PBS exhaust manifold. This is actually the second system I've built for this car. The first system used a Rayjay turbo and external wastegate. That system took up allot of room.

The manifold was made for some other turbo. The I had a machine shop open the hole and drill it for a Garrett T3. The turbo is from a Volvo 240. I made the downpipe on a spare engine using well pipe and pieces of exhaust pipe.

The engine is pretty much stock. I run 7 lbs of boost which I found a Fiat engine can handle without any internal mods. Anything about that requires more work like the clutch, o-ringing the block, larger injectors, etc.

I'm using a 5 pin GM HEI control module for the ignition retard.
Fuel injection: A Malpassi riding rate fuel pressure regulator.

To "trick" the ECU I mounted a series of pressure switches. One disrupts the signal between the ECU and O2 sensor as soon as it detects pressure. This keeps the ECU from trying to lean the fuel mixture out when it sees more fuel generated by the fuel pressure regulator.

The other one grounds the pin on the HEI module.

And the 3rd kicks the AC compressor off under boost for more power.

I had the car dynoed at around 123 HP and 140 ft lbs of torque at the rear wheels. Got any more questions, feel free to ask. The car runs great. I can't imagine not having a turbo on this car.
