1978 Hood hold open mechanism

Postby red » Mon Jan 12, 2015 9:13 pm

Hey guys, My 1978 small bump hood hold open mechanism was destroyed and missing when I purchased my Fiat. Does anyone have a good photo of what it should look like and what parts I need to return it to normal working condition??? It currently just has an old swing chain bolted to the hood and fender to keep it from opening too far.

As always, Thanks for the insight and tips.

See below for the parts. The sheetmetal piece is bolted to the radiator support, the longer 90 degree end of the rod goes through the holders in the hood, and the spring is wound around that part:

You can buy there parts used for less. I think I may have a set.

I had that hood and springed rod to hold it open
however they tend to fall when the wind blows and it falls forward
causing a huge dent in the hood that looks like a frown
I wanted to cry. so when I had my car painted my body guy suggested
a new hood. for a while I used a coat hanger to keep it open.
in the back of my head screaming don't do it that way.
a bit later I bought a parts car (1980) that had the spring hood prop.
its been 15 yrs now and no further dents

just my story .joe
