Two Small Fuel lines by rear drivers jacking point

Postby mullioni » Mon Mar 20, 2017 10:11 pm

I am starting to replace all of the old cloth covered rubber fuel lines in the rear end of the spider. As the metal lines go forward, ahead of the rear wheel well, there is a small section of cloth covered rubber hose (two lines) just forward of the rear jacking point on the drivers side. Just near where the front of the long trailing arm connects. This small section appears to connect two sets of hard fuel lines, one from the rear, and the other going forward into the cabin. However, when trying to cut through the hose for removal, it appears that the metal fuel line may run through the entire length (approx. 7.5").

Does anyone have any experience with replacing these?

That's my goal. I thought I felt metal inside one when trying to cut through it towards the middle and stopped. I thought I better ask first. I didn't want to damage the metal line if it ran all the way through underneath and create a bigger problem. It's not the easiest place to work and with the old non flexible hose, I thought to cut it in half to make it easier to work with and remove.

If you're worried about that, I would slice them down the side with a razor knife a little at a time. They will break open with a little persuasion, as they are doubtless old and brittle.

Mystery Solved! The lines are separated for a few inches. This also helped confirm the ID of the rubber lines. 7mm for the supply and 5mm for the return.

If all of your rubber fuel lines are original to the car, then it's time to replace them--from the tank to the engine compartment and back. It's not all that difficult and you'll find several postings here on the subject to give you some tips.

You should probably also check the condition of these steel lines just inside the passenger compartment. Mine looked OK underneath, but were really rusty just inside the body, as water can pool around them.
