Tune up kit. Is there one ?

My new 72 fiat spider 1600 is in need of basic maintenance. Does any supplier out there offer a kit? Distributor, rotor button, points, plugs wires,, oil filter , etc? I've searched a bit, but no dice so far.

all of the parts are available separately. Many owners have upgraded their ignitions to a more modern system that doesn't use points

I find i use AR 99% of the time. Once i used the site that hosts another forum, but got very poor/ no support.

Who do you use?... or does this violate forum rules ?

watch out, anarchy might break out!

basic, stock ignition stuff is something most vendors will carry & much of it may be pretty hard to have an issue with. What was said upthread is a good point....so often, the points/condensor setup is ditched on the early cars. I usually buy tune-up parts in bulk. I used to use the same ignition setup on all my cars to make it a bit simpler, but seems like I've "diversified" a bit more recently. I hate points. I gave a local Fiat enthusiast a shoe box full of new '71-'78 points & condensor sets a few months ago so I wouldn't be tempted to actually use that stuff!

Well, we tried getting her to start, but no luck.
I have found local shops with a coil and plugs, and planned to install this weekend.
Can the points system be removed and replaced with the Pertronix system I see advertised for 76 bucks or so?

Also, during the attempts to start, we started wondering if the fuelpump under the hood is the only pump. is there a sending unit that should be working from the fuel tank?

Trying to get some answers before we start disassembling the cars fuel system and testing things.

Thanks for any help and any responses anyone is wiling to give.

Have you had it running? The mechanical pump is worth checking...I've had 2 recently that continued to pump fuel but were also pumping into the crankcase.

I'm fairly sure the Pertronix will work on yours (should be a different distributor than on the CS1 124s, but same points setup, so...), or there's the crane or the stock '79-up setup...all I would say are preferable to the stock points.

decades ago fiat parts vendors offered kits such a brake pads with hardware.
fiat owners refused to buy them. wanted what they needed only. kits went byebye.

I guess vendors could try again. 10% off list price of individual items. items etc.

but then the guys who "had their own forum" already offer a discount on online sales. so a deeper discount would be difficult with the price wars going on. those guys are good guys, give them another chance

I think there are some vendor "kit" sets. Driveshaft renewal is One that comes to mind. In my case even after years and years there are parts of routine maintenance items that I still have stocks of new in my basement so I'm not a super example customer.

Who had or has their own forum?

I'm sure this is old news, but the foreign car parts store here has no idea what distributor I have, what carb I have, and with the weather being a bit too cold, I haven't been out to get numbers off the old parts. I'm guessing Fiat didn't keep good notes by Vin telling what was put on which cars, lol.... That's ok. It's a treasure hunt now.

Here in Canada, it's a gamble whether my auto parts contact has a listing for certain Fiat essentials and when they do it pays to check with Auto Ricambi's prices on their website. I have found for example brake pads, distributor components, control module etc, even after $$ exchange and shipping it still pays to place the order with AR.
Furthermore, AR's inventory is continually moving, you're sure that your components don't come in dusty old packaging that's been sitting on a shelf, handled, manipulated or dropped about for a decade or more.

My 2 cents is to get it running first - whether electrical or fuel before putting electronic ignition. Since you bought it without knowing it runs just trouble shoot back from plugs and carb - but you have worked on cars before.
I am about to put in the electronic ignition from AR - I like Mark's but do not have the coin at this time. My distributor is way down on the block as I have the 1438.

After running strongly suggest you change the timing belt (these are interference engines), look at the Guibo (the drive shaft donut), the drive shaft center bearing (mine was ratting around) and absolutely the front suspension torques and condition of the parts. You need to get a book specific to your year as the torques are different from year to year- I got mine off of ebay and were factory manuals. (The non-factory manuals can be dangerous - but sometimes also helpful.) This site has been a life saver. I had a cross member bolt that was almost sawed through as was loose. Then check the valve clearances when cold. Need to get shims to change and I personally like the forked tool to get them out.
