Speedometer bounces only at low speeds

Postby Stevo » Sun Feb 12, 2017 5:13 am

At less than 40MPH the speedometer bounces. It does less so as speed increases. I took of the connection at the transmission and check and lubed it there. I have yet to check the dash which will be the next. Does anyone have experience dealing with similar situation? Do the gauges, cable or part at transmission usually cause this at only 44k miles? Thank you so much for help! :)

remove the inner cable from the sheath, clean it, lubricate it with Vaseline or light grease

This happened to me after pulling the dash (gauges) out a bit to check some wiring. The cable "bent" behind the dash when I put it back apparently. I pulled gently from the fire wall side to take out the slack and the problem resolved.

Thank you. I will be trying these two procedures very soon. My next item to fix.

Question for mark, I assume that the cable must be unconnected from the tranny in order to pull the inner cable out?

Question for stevo, did you get your speedo cable problem fixed? I am having the same problem, so that's why I'm wondering about it.

you don't have to disconnect at the trans to pull the inner cable

Mark, do I have to pull the the cable housing through the firewall into the engine compartment in order to pull the inner cable out.

So I did as mark suggested I pulled the inner cable out and coated it with poly lube that I got from my mechanic. Put it back in and problems went away. I have used the poly lube before. It's amazing stuff. I have no idea where they got it.
