Removal of rear brake discs 1979 2000??

Postby maxdog » Mon Jan 30, 2017 2:49 pm

HI
I'n on my way to replacing my rear axle oil seal, every thing came apart fairly easily until I tried to remove the rear disc, to get to the snap ring retaining the axle shaft .
The disc won't move ,I can't see any obvious way of shifting it.The Fiat shop manual is silent on rear disc removal , there's nothing helpful in the Brake and Axle sections . "I thought the other guy was doing it , not my job, I'm not responsible"
I,ve soaked the disc in penetrating fluid , whats next ?? Prayers ,Applied violence with a "Birmingham screwdriver"[ a 7 lb lump hammer ] , heat , jacking screws in the two small tapped holes , a big hairy puller with a 36 inch pry bar ??
Any suggestions , please ?

Should just pull off. Did you undo the two alignment bolts?

Alignment bolts ?? Are these the two small bolts that hold the spacer in place on the front of the disc ?? If so I removed them . I'm looking at a bare disc face with nothing holding the disc on, except perhaps some rust .
So far I've tried dosing with penetrating oil followed by gentle persuasion with a hide faced hammer , with no success, What's the next step ?? Can I use longer bolts in the alignment bolt holes to push the disc off ?? Do I need a big puller , the centre of the axle shaft looks as though it's machined to accept the centre bolt of a puller. What's next ,Heat ?? Graduated violence .??

There is a tool that has three arms that pull back of rotor in three places relative to the hub. You can see it in video.

With that said:
I did it a crude way on my rear rotors (both stuck).
I had new rotors to install (4 delivered for $56!!!!); so even if I damaged rotors, I didn't care.
I first took soft rubber mallet at tapped from behind; no luck
I then took metal hammer and pounded from behind going around in circular fashion along edge. They eventually loosened. The hammer did cause some nicks at edge of rotor; but not to effect brake to pad surface.
When they broke loose, there was a layer of rust on hub that needed to be sanded to replace rotor.
I wrote a detailed thread labeled "rotor replacement". My new rotors were not sitting flush. I sanded rust off of hub......but the problem was the rust on edge of hub that sits inside the back of rotor (read thread)
