Wood steering wheel

Postby rjkoop » Thu Jun 23, 2016 11:17 am

My birthday's coming up and family's looking for ideas... :D

Thinking about the wood steering wheel. I really like this one from Allison's automotive. Anyone have this one?

Goes for $199 US.

I find some seem too wide, some are too skinny, some look too modern, and some are too shiny. I think this one fits the bill. Anyone have other ideas that work well and look nice/classic? And bolt right on to an '81.

Beware of dangerous knock-offs. There are way too many out there:

Price is not a good indicator either as a good number of the fakes are being sold at the full MSRP of the genuine articles.

Dish as well as diameter and rim thickness is important. Maybe ask Mark what these dimensions are on his wheel. While seated in your car at proper pedal position, imagine where these dimensions would place your hands.

Also, the problem with a nice new wood wheel is that you'll want to upgrade the dash wood immediately! :o

I've used that wheel (photo you've posted) for about a year and love it. Feels great and looks amazing. I ditched the centre cap in favour of the original horn button.

you didn't need to remove the hub, it could have stayed in place

Yep. Makes sense. But I think I have to drill out the old screws. They won't come off easy. Once I get them off it will all make sense I'm sure.

I know more than one person who found the sun reflecting off chrome and polished aluminum steering a real safety issue. I know they look great and i personally have never driven with one.

I have wheels with different diameters and dish depths to suit most any driver. I agree on the chrome spokes, watch out on a sunny day and that's why I have several wheel choices with black spokes
