Where to Install Rear Speakers

Postby BT124 » Sat Jan 17, 2015 2:41 pm

I finally installed a radio in my 1979 Spider, but it only has front speakers and doesn't sound very good. Any suggestions on where to install rear speakers? I thought the side pockets (where the rear window folds into) but not much room there. I really don't want to cut holes in back seat- that's where the dog rides, when it runs! Any suggestions?
Thx

I've done that panel that you described

Some shallow-depth 6x9s will fit, and sometimes the plastic ring can be removed from the speaker and moved from above to below the speaker frame, for even less total depth when installed

There are also speaker depth extenders available for cheap, do a quick search.

I have my 6x9s in small boxes sitting on the back seat
out side the 2 10 inch woffer box.
and boston acustic 2.5 under the dash
powered by a 6 channel amp and a alpine head unit
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

The PO tried to install speakers on either side of the rear seat and then found that the retracted quarter windows did not provide enough clearance. She left the speaker grilles in place to cover the holes. There are spacers you can buy (like wheel spacers), and I plan to get some and install speakers eventually. There are also shallow speakers designed for tight spaces, so perhaps one wouldn't need a particularly thick spacer. After all, you wouldn't want to reduce the room available to luxuriate in that capacious back seat!

Here's a link that shows spacers of various thicknesses:

Custom Autosound has some nice Undercover Speakers available at http://www.vintagecarradio.com/speakers ... autosound/ if you can find any rear ones.

I have the 6x9s in the rear as well. its... ok

The simplest, most compact and elegant solution is to get a JBL xtreme bluetooth enabled speaker and just put it on the rear seat or rear floor, and play from your ipod or phone. The base response is superior. Plus you can take it anywhere, from car to boat to picnic

Sounds better than speakers in the back panels, and, don't need to cut a thing.
