Do they control vehicle inspection and licensing? That sort of stuff? Like our Registry of Motor Vehicles?

Almost MOTO or MOTOO.

Here in the States it can be Department of Motor Vehicles, Tag Office (as in license/registration plates/tags) or Registry of Motor Vehicles. It all depends on the authority tasked by the State for providing the service. State Police, County Tax Collector, etc.

Before reform in the 80's or 90's I think it was, the Registry in Massachusetts (RMV) was contracted out to the Russian bureaucracy, staffed by former Gestapo. It has improved amazingly since they fixed it up. It is much better now. Used to be you would get in a line with 50 or so people in it, wait at least an hour, just in order to find out what other line you should be in. Not kidding. It would take more than half a day to get anything done. But seriously, they have really improved the process, and should be complemented for a rare case of government efficiency actually improving. Most of the stuff needed can now be done totally online instead of inline.

Sometimes they would send you to the RMV in the next town because they did not handle that process there only to find once you drove the 30 minutes that all they would do is put a stamp on your paperwork and force you to drive the 30 minutes back to the first RMV you were at earlier to get back in the same line where you were before. If there was an error in the placement of the stamp or ommission they would put another stamp on indicating it was rejected requiring that you get back into the first line and start over. Of course this would usually be revealed only once you got to the end of the 6th to 8th line. If you hit things just wrong you could end up haveing to come back the next day or perish on Monday to start the process over again.

Next time my insurance agent said he would take care of it all at no charge I let him.

When I moved to Florida they lost the record of my turning in the old registration and put out a hold on my Florida Drivers License for back excise taxes. When I called to let them know they were mistaken and that I had the receipt to prove it I found it cost double the tax fee (non-refundable of course) to reopen the closed case so I would not have to pay the $125. Glad they fixed that mess.

regarding the indicator, I had someone ask me why there is only the one, I told them so you know one of your indicators is on, then they replied 'How do you which one is on' ...Stunned I gave them that look of 'how stupid are you??'' but said you know which way your going right??

Thanks for this post. Like others, I spent some time puzzled, and now I know to move on to one of the other hundreds of things I need to do to get my spider on the road :) Love this forum!
