Things to do while Engine is out

Postby searya » Mon Mar 26, 2018 8:56 pm

I just pulled my engine to make it easy to change the oil pan gasket and clean it up.

It is a 1984 Engine with 32k miles on it. Any suggestions for maintenance or upgrades I should do while it is out? Hoping this will be the one and only time I have to pull it.

Thanks,

Did you pull the engine + transmission, or just engine?

The potential list is probably quite long, but I'll just mention one thing (because I just did it with the engine in the car, and it's rather a PITA that way, my knuckles are still healing): oil vapor separator - remove, clean, and replace the hoses & clamps. Don't forget the little flame arrestor, too.

Pull that steering gearbox and idler out and give them both a thorough cleaning and service. Replace the fluid and seals and adjust the lash of the gearbox. Give the crossmember and motor mounts a thorough inspection from the top side. I'd also replace all the rubber fuel lines on that engine while you have the easy access to do so.

Agreed. I really like the gear reduction starter and I put a relay to it- or put in a relay to the old starter. And look at motor mounts - what better time.

Here's what I did:
Clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, timing belt, tensioner belt bearing, supercharger belt, water pump, gear-reduction starter, oil cooler, oil cooler supply hoses, intake cam gear, seals for cams, auxiliary and crank gears, rad hoses, aluminum heat shield over the steering rack, and tranny tunnel insulation.

Thanks for all the replies.

I plan to incorporate all of them as I really don't want to do this again :)
