Engine Mount Studs

Postby t00nces » Sun Feb 25, 2018 12:54 pm

Greetings,

Does anyone know the size and number of studs that are used to secure the engine mounts to the block? Diagrams I've seen only show one stud and I'm not sure that's correct given there are four mounting holes ;) A fairly exhaustive search doesn't seem to reference them besides the diagram I mentioned and none of the usual sources list them for sale.

Regards,

t.

T,

I just went through this on my 79 for an oil leak which I will cover later. On each side of the block there are four threaded holes for the engine mounts. Two of the holes are blind holes. I would put a toothpick in each of the holes to find out the depth of the blind holes, then subtract 5mm for the length of your bolts. I had one of these laying around and the size and pitch was M8 x 1.0. All eight bolts get lock-washers.

The holes that are open to the engine block cavity get a hot oil bath. These bolts need thread sealant when assembling the engine mounts. My 70 and 79 manuals don’t cover these bolts but similar M8 bolts are torqued to about 15 lb-ft.

My 1970 manual shows torque 18 ft lbs. It also shows the four studs on each side to be be M8x1.25's. Maybe different for different years - but easy to find out - get a bolt and see if it threads easily. And yes use studs as aforementioned. On mine extra outside length of stud does not interfere with anything - but again might be different for your year.

Sorry about my mistake. I went to the local hardware store with my bolt and the gauge confirms that the engine mount bolt is definitely an M8 x 1.25mm. I can't confirm the length though. The PO used strange combination of lengths.
