It is setup so that it circulates through the block only until the temp opens the t-stat, then it passes through the radiator. Provides more rapid heat up of the block than if it circulated through the entire path during warm up.

yes, I see that - but is anyone going to address my point that the 'wax pod' which actuates the opening of the stat, is in contact with the cold water from the bottom hose. How can it get hot enough to open?
I can only assume that I am missing something - or that I am not making myself clear - or that nobody can answer my question;

When the thermostat is closed the water from the tee flows to the thermostat and into the water pump via suction from the pump. And presto chango the thermostat gets hot.

When the thermostat opens it blocks most of the upper flow and then the water flows into the thermostat mostly from the radiator.

yes thanks, I do fully understand that.
what I am struggling with is that the actuator of the stat is is contact with the cold water in the bottom hose and I am wondering how it can get hot enough to open.

The circulating, very hot water on the other side provides enough heat to open it.

That is the answer I was hoping for.
The reason I was questionuing it is that on my FIAT Coupe (1995 car) I had to fit a new thermostat in line inside the top hose (because the original ones are no longer available) and it would not work when the wax pod was at the radiator end of the hose, in order to work it had to be at the hot (engine end) of the hose, so of course that got me to thinking.

If all of that seems confusing,...here's an engine cooling troubleshoot nightmare for y'all!
Some P.O. didn't recognize the existence of the Fiat thermostat and decided to install one. They added one that would fit at the base of the coolant T. Badaboom, badabing,...two thermostats!
TALK ABOUT COOLANT ISSUES!
Took me a bit to figure that one out,...glad you are getting your Fiat's problem solved!
