I have the older style linkage (not the cable) on my '73. I had to shorten the linkage rod (between carb stud and linkage stud). After doing this I found the spring that holds the activation rod in the bracket on the valve cover was no where near able to hold the rod in the bracket and it kept falling out. I put a flatwasher behind the bushing in the bracket and then marked the shaft with a sharpie just behind the washer. I removed the shaft and filed a groove around the shaft at the sharpie line. I reassembled everything and put a snap ring in the groove. That was a year ago and has been fine ever since.
