silly questions (or maybe not)

Postby btoran » Wed May 24, 2017 8:44 am

took my car into the shop to repair a head gasket leak. when i got the car back, i noticed the oil fill was in a different location. before the repair, it was on the front left of the engine (when standing in front of the car looking into the engine bay). after the repair, it is now on the right side of the engine near the firewall. in other words, the valve covers were reversed during the repair.

silly (or not) questions....

1. does the orientation of the oil fill matter?

2. assuming it does not, which orientation is factory correct? when i called the shop back they said they have 2 other 124s
and both have the orientation opposite my original one, which is why they changed mine. skeptical me says they could
now have 3 cars with an incorrect orientation.

only the FI cars had the oil fill on the left side (driver's) of the engine. If the oil fill is on the front of an FI car, the cap interferes with the aux air regulator hose. The cylinder head has oil crossovers cast in, so it only really matters for ease of access

mine is not FI and the oil fill is now on the driver's side (near the firewall). so maybe the other 2 cars they checked were FI and made mine the same. on mine, it was easier to get to on the passenger toward the radiator.

Ya I would switch it to passenger front side, how were they able to mount your accelerator cable (words escape me as to what it is called) as it should mount on top of the drivers side valve cover.

Swap 'em. It takes all of a few minutes.
