Dipstick Length

Postby SteveLandry » Sat Apr 29, 2017 12:17 pm

I am restoring a 1970 spider. I have a 2000 engine from a 1980 spider I bought from Goodwill Industries. That car had been damaged in that the radiator and oil pan had been smashed. Someone "repaired" it with a 1600/1800 oil pump and oil pan. It never ran. It couldn't have run, because the oil pump fouled a nut on the front connecting rod.

Anyway, after getting that sorted out, it occurred to me that it might have an 1600 dipstick, too. The 2000 oil pan is about 1 1/2 inches deeper than the 1600 oil pan. Would someone with a 2000 engine please measure the blade length of their dipstick so I can sort this out?

Thanks in advance.

My 2L '80 FI has a dipstick that is:

25-1/2" Overall Length, including handle.

21" Just the steel portion that goes into the tube, up to and including the part that is riveted to the handle.

23-1/8" From the seating plane on the rubber stopper to the tip of the dipstick.

Thanks Pete. Just what I needed.
Looks like I have the right one, after all.

Measured with my tape rule, maybe accurate to a +/- 1/16" at BEST.

Re: Dipstick Length Alternative dipstick design ??

Postby maxdog » Thu May 11, 2017 3:16 pm

I have a 1979 2 litre engine with a short dipstick . My dipstick fits directly into the engine block , there is no extension tube .
The overall length of the dip stick from tip to top of handle is 12 " from tip to the seating face of the seal on the dip stick 91/2 ""
High oil level mark is 21/2"from tip , low level mark is 13/4" from tip
Can anyone confirm that this is correct ; or do I have an engine with a McGyvered dip stick ??
