Spark plug insert

Postby rjkoop » Fri Apr 07, 2017 4:42 pm

I have this insert to redo thread on #4 spark plug hole.

New thread in head is good and clean. Used the spark plug to screw the insert in but when I try to remove the spark plug the insert comes back out with it. Is there a trick to keeping the insert in when removing the spark plug? Once I get it to stay in place I know I have to strike the top to set it but can't get it to stay in there.

A little JB Weld on the threads and let it sit overnight before trying to take the spark plug out? Maybe an impact wrench to snap the plug loose, as opposed to a slow turn with a regular wrench?

What does the manufacturer of the insert recommend?

Usually on Time-sert inserts the end with the knurling is tapered, so that would go into the head first (away from the hex on the spark plug). Then when the spark plug is screwed in, it flares out and pushes the knurling into the head to lock it in place. If it's not working like that, I would maybe try some red threadlock on the external threads, or like suggested above, JB Weld.

Got it in now. I cleaned out the threads and was able to turn in the insert by hand. On this.one the knurled end is at the top and you set it by pounding the top with the provided set tool and that locks it in place. It's a knockoff of the save-a-thread https://www.amazon.ca/Helicoil-5334-14-Thread-Thread-Repair/dp/B0002SRF4O kit. And worked great. I'll test tomorrow once the rtv dries.

Car started great. And no more puffing during each compression stroke on cylinder #4. It probably caused a number of issues that I thought was an air leak or I could fix by tuning. Now I'm going back to basics... I've adjusted the AFM and I'll retune the idle now. I still have to adjust the idle/mixture screw on the AFM because the PO adjusted it and I have no idea if it is was right. I'll try the voltage output on the oxygen sensor to tune this as best I can. And check the spark plugs after driving for a bit. Maybe auto parts places loan a sensor I could plug before the catalytic converter to get an accurate reading on the oxygen level? Not 100% sure the voltage on the oxygen sensor will be good because I'm not even sure of the condition/age of the O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold.

There was also a bit of air in the coolant system so this could have caused some inconsistent idle for sure.

Always learning...

I have a blow form the spark plug hole on no 3 cylinder, is this something that can be fixed with an insert without removing the head etc.
