Traditional hot tanking will eat up the bearing face material. And replacing the aux shaft bearings is no picnic.

Yep, I only spray washing it. My aux shaft is good and the bearings look ok. Thanks for the heads up.

check for radial play between aux shaft and bearing. any is too much

Thanks, to show my ignorance I had no idea that I could search overseas ebays, :o . I have a little longer wait than I wanted, the machinist says he is booked solid for a month. I might just bye the cylinder bore gauge and micrometers and do it myself. Again thanks for the ebay link.

I ended up buying the pistons, that way if i need the block to be bored I am good. Then sell the ones I don't need. Thanks fiatfactory

Update: I got the block back from the machinist it had to bored 0.4mm over so getting the pistons from Italy was great. However, I may be over stressing since this is my first rebuild ever, the machinist vatted my block and I was wondering if the aux shaft bearings are ruined now. They do not look bad;

I know seeing them in a photo isn't enough but do you think I just proceed with the rebuild and hope for the best?

Looks OK to me. Some machinists use non-caustic chemicals in their hot tank. If your clearance feels nice and close, I'd leave it alone.

install aux shaft in it's place and check for radial play. any is too much

Well, I have finally got most of the parts and enough courage to attempt assembly. I just finished with the crank and pistons.

I will finish up the bottom end then put the head on, how does the block surface look? I used some 320grit sandpaper and a sanding block but can not seem to remove all the black stuff without removing metal.

As long as you don't have any pitting to go along with the black marks, I'd say you're good. You could also ask your machinist. I'm guessing he would have suggested to skim cut the top of the block if he thought it was an issue.

How did you post your pictures?
Photobucket, apparently it doesn't work anymore.
Well I just got back from vacation and am eager to get started putting the rest of the motor together. I was wondering on the paper gaskets, should I use RTV sealant on them or install them dry? There seems to be two school of thoughts on this, some just use RTV others use a thin layer on the part side plus gasket. I am particularly worried about the water block off plate on the back of the motor, I would hate for it to leak. Also, couldn't find torque specs on the front and rear crank covers but looked up specs for 6M x 1.25 thread with washer and found ~8lbs, does this sound right?

I use fast tack spray gasket sealer from Locktite on paper gasket, not RTV.
