Gorgeous Day

Postby spidernut » Sun Jan 28, 2018 11:56 pm

Today was a gorgeous day in Northern California, so I decided to drive the Spider up to Home Depot and buy some stuff I needed for electrical work on my project car. The top went down and it was an awesome drive!

After several hours of frustrating work trying to solder some wires with a defective soldering gun, I drove back up to the Home Depot to exchange the faulty soldering gun. Dang....the mosquitoes were thick as can be. :x Had to put the top up. :(

Still, a nice break from the rain and fog.

In Northern, CA, we get those biting little obnoxious critters year round. We get a rain, followed by sunshine and 60+ degree days and they come out in force. They're predicting temps in the mid 60s all week, so it will be a nightmare.

It wouldn't be as bad if it weren't for the preservation of the watersheds that they have protected as a wetland. We have a huge stagnant watershed right behind what will be our new elementary school and a block from my house. I'm sure that playground will be a blast as children will get eaten alive by mosquitoes.

Still, they pale in comparison to the mosquitoes we had in Abilene, Texas, or in Okinawa, Japan. I felt like a human buffet line for mosquitoes there and would even end up breathing them in they were so thick.

I would have thought Abilene was dry! That is a surprise.

Abilene gets summer thunderstorms called Blue Northers. It will be 90 degrees out, 50% humidity and then in comes the thunderstorm and dumps 1" of rain in about an hour or two and moves on. The temp drops about 15 degrees and everything is soaked. Then the sun comes back out. After a few of those, you get clouds of mosquitoes.

Once, we had several days of warm rain and my lawn was about 6" tall. I really needed to mow it, so I put on long pants and sprayed myself from head to toe with mosquito repellent. After about 10 seconds, I went inside and wrapped a bandanna across my mouth and nose because I was eating and breathing in mosquitoes.

I braved it and mowed one strip of the lawn and felt some biting on my arm. I missed a spot with the repellent and had a swarm of mosquitoes around and landing on that one spot. I gave up and went inside. A day or two later, I didn't see any mosquitoes when I mowed my lawn.

Sunny and 50+ degrees here today!
Started and ran the Spider. Got some fine bodywork done.
Too bad we're laid up, it would have been nice to go out for a run,...hope to be in the frame/bodyshop in the next couple of weeks. The Spider and I will be taking advantage of a lot of nice days after that!
Enjoy your Spider (or Spiders) spidernut! Drive carefully!
