We got the idea for the tats after drinking beer in a bar with some sailors. Yes we were underage. Would love to see a picture of that intersection Arik. Remember eating smoked meat sandwich near that corner.

That corner is the red light district. Lots of history there. It's also refered to "The Main" the term dating back to the 18th century when the city was fortified. The red light district was the main gate into the fortified city and ladies of the night always crowded that district mainly near the gate. The walls were brought down in 1805. In more modern times the neighborhood retained the "sin city" reputation, good eats, good booze, brothels, peep shows, broadway etc.
There was a famous tattoo shop in the 80s called the Super Rock. Not sure if the same place was around in 1967.

Mtl Poolroom was not a pool room, in fact it was a famous hot dog joint that celebrated its 100 th birthday in 2012. For their birthday gift, they moved across the street after being expropriated.

Cafe Cleopatra is known for its famous drag shows (one of the 1st places that accepted that sort of thing) and private booths with where dancers in drag, goth, school girl etc gave the customer the best value for his dollar. Upstairs is a burlesque club.
It's still in business, they're fighting expropriation as the whole city block may remain as a "national historic site". A big fight erupted and is a never ending story.

Oh yeah, this must be your smoked meat sandwich 10 minutes walk up the street. Almost makes you want to return, huh?
It could not have been Dunn's, none in this district.

In that same time period, I seem to remember special snow tires (used on the rear wheels only, I think) that were recaps with a special rubber blend containing sawdust. They lasted only one season, but were great on Pittsburgh's snowy and icy hills. Did you have these up there?

I'm not old enough to remember these. A search turns up very little on this topic. Google is not my friend :(

Thanks Arik. Yes that is the smoked meat sandwich I was remembering! I have returned several times and always make a point to take the time to return to the "Main" to relive some of my earlier recollections of my times in this area and ponder the new developments with a tinge of sadness. I have sent you a PM let me know if you didn't get it. Hopefully we can meet up at a Spider gathering some day.

Our hockey team did have some historic wins at one time. We as fans still take our hockey seriously today.

They quit issuing us pretty colorful license plates after 1979. Renewal tags were affixed yearly for a bit and now we don't even get that. We are waiting patiently for personalized plates which has been in the works for a few years now.

This is the way police officers dress in my city for quite some years now.

Ari, thanks for the posts! Like Funcar, I was in your city for Expo, but being 13 I was no where near "The Main". Spent the entire week on "the islands" of Expo, while crewing a 57' Chris Craft Connie there and then back to Chicago (owned by my employer at the time....sometimes paper routes paid off!). Spent a few nights in some port towns on the way back; great education for a teenager at the time!

Being a car nut, I was intrigued by the different grilles and trims on the standard Detroit iron I was seeing in Canada. A Chevy Acadian? Who'd a thunk?? :)

Thanks; looking forward to more....

Neil,
You have a good attention to detail. You must have owned such a car and wondered why this one didn't have a split grill.

Carmakers had to respond to (Auto Pact Agreement) APTA's regulations whenever a model was not allowed to be sold in Canada or if ridiculous tarifs were added to the cost. Some Canadian market cars were manufactured with different trims and rebadged while using different grills or taillights.  They tended to play with styling cues while the body remained the same.  For example, since the Pontiac Tempest was not sold in Canada, GM rebadged the Chevy II as the Pontiac Acadian/Acadian Beaumont.
Another example is the Meteor in the 50s .  Face-lifted Fords were glorified with extra chrome trimming and  the Mercury Meteor was born so that Canadian Lincoln/Mercury dealers had another line to sell.  Gas pump jockeys would gawk in amazement at these cars from Canada doing a road trip into the states.  Eventually in the 60s Canada discontinued the brand when U.S. cars were introduced to name their own.
I was in Germany some years ago and noticed my girlfriend's "Chrysler Voyager" was a rebadged Plymouth Voyager powered by a 4 speed manual transmission and a 2 L diesel engine.  Plymouth was not a brand ever heard of in Germany.  At the time in Canada, we had the Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager and Chrysler Town &Country all automatics and gas motors.

We do not manufacture any cars that we can call our own. Today however our huge automotive industry has car assembly plants scattered in different areas for GM, Chrysler, Ford, Honda and Toyota built for locally and for International trade.

Did you know?
The Chev Vega was built in a way so that it can be shipped vertically topped with fluids.

This lost photo album of Expo 67 was found on the street in Massachussets.  Whoever found it kept it and eventually posted the photos online.

Tx Ari
And here I thought all my memory brain cells were dead!
I was 9 years old when we left Ottawa in my uncles' Olds 98 to go to Expo. Remember lying on the back dashboard (ya it was that big) for most of the ride...Try doing that today!
What amazed me (easily amazed at 9) was the driver-less tramways. Imagine, a "computer" was driving these things...
Someone should make a car like that!
