Still looks like a Miata

I just wish they would honor the heritage of the car. Everything I have seen looks like a Miata with stuff glued on it.

I agree. While I think the new Miata looks pretty good, I think the styling of the car should be significantly different and more in keeping with the original. I assume Pininfarina was not involved with this project, and if they're not, it would have cool if they were. If they are, then perhaps I overestimated their design powers. :)

The big Sergio Pininfarina was unique. Just look the difference between the 124 spider designed by him and the 124 sedan or coupe designed by the "Centro stile FIAT". The Pinin's machines are masterpieces . The current "Fiat Style Center" has created the new 500. Very beautiful. We hope well

in looking at the new 124, I am disappointed. obviously it was not designed by an Italian. Although a nice looking car it does not live up to the reputation of Italian designers. It is just a new version of a Miata with the fiat name on it.

Tom Tjaarda should get the credit, it was his design while he was at Pininfarina https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Tjaarda
Very talented man

If Tom didn't have (and he still) talent, Pininfarina didn't call him from America.

I'm not sure what you are tying to state here??

It would have been nice if FCA commissioned Tjaarda to pen the new 124 but that doesn't appear to be the case at all??

TopGear posted a article showing a picture with a slider of the new MX5 and the new 124 to make it more interesting to compare the following two images:

Very interesting. Many constraints, having to adapt to the structure of the MX5.
Seen in this way, I prefer the 124. Longer

But I do like the philosophy of the MX-5. Define the hard points, drape the bodywork over it, remove whatever is not necessary. It's very much like the Elise design in that way.

I wonder if part of the extra volume in the nose of the 124 is specifically to accommodate the intercooler, or would it have anyway fit?

I think both are valid and attractive. Part of the reason I bought a Coupe, after years of experience with a friend's spider, was passing by a parked Coupe while walking through town (had never seen one before) and seeing some very interesting lines emerging. Boano did some quite harmonious things with the design of the Coupe. The symmetry of the greenhouse, the rear Kamm-like tail matching the slight forward rake of the nose, the quite prominent tumblehome and light-breaking crease on the upper body, and the nifty little line that starts at the door and heads over the rear "shoulders" of the car. It's subtle, but I park every day next to an Alfa Bertone coupe and find the Fiat just as successful, in a different way.

Of course I like the Spider too.

And this puts it in perspective! So which is which?

Often the car designed by Pininfarina are masterpieces. In Italy there is no one like him. (perhaps only the team - Ferrari style center). For me, the 124 coupe is beautiful. An extremely clean. Balance and proportion. And so pleasant to watch. A "True" Classic car. The small model of the 124 c is almost always present in the collections. But, Pininfarina did ... masterpieces ...

The one with the Fiat Centers on the wheels is the new Spider and the one with the Mazda Centers on the wheels is the MX5.
