Just finished steering wheel

Postby Vandrid » Fri Jun 16, 2017 3:51 pm

Just finished restoring the steering wheel. At first I was just going to paint it since the thing was old and black, but my paint job was bubbled. So I started sanding my paint off to try again; low and behold, someone had painted it black before me. So I got to sanding and few hours later this is the result!

Most of these steering wheels were painted black by the factory fyi. Looks good though! :D

You might need to coat the newly exposed metal to keep it from rusting.

Mine developed a light surface rust shortly after I sanded it down.

I already did a polish/wax on it. I still need to sand the back and once I do I'm going to paint it with a clear coat enamel

What the heck is wrong with my steering wheel? Wants to be silver-ish. But rub it a bit and it turns black. Is bare metal under the black?

Was it painted silver over the black?

You may have to go through both the silver and black to get to bare metal.

Yeah, I assume previous owner sprayed it silver, but it rubs off quite easily. If that's what he/she did...not much of a paint job. Thanks for the input.

Yeah I had to really go at mine with a wet sand and paint thinner, so its probably painted silver
