Replace Mid-Pipe: To Be or Not to BE?!

Hi everyone, Just discovered that our '79 carbed Spider has a rusted out resonator (front muffler). So now, I'm trying to decide whether to replace it with a new one or have a straight pipe installed in its place. A year ago, I had a straight pipe installed where my cat. converter had been. Wondering how it would sound with a straight pipe in place of the resonator. Anyone do this already? Thanks, Don in Pa.

I was faced with a similar choice on my `77 several years back. What I was told at the time is that top-down the car would sound a little louder, but with the top up the interior would be very "boomy" without the resonator in place.

I never tested that claim. I replaced the unit and kept the system basically "stock" apart from installing an ANSA-built, single output style, rear muffler.

As she is now she sounds perfect to me ears.

My '77 has the pipe and an Ansa. Not loud at all.
