Bleeding brakes

Postby Fiatcatapult » Sun Jun 18, 2017 6:52 am

I may have some air in the brake lines and I am trying to bleed the brakes and I can't find the bleeder screw. On other cars that I've owned, that screw was usually sitting at the top or around the brake cylinders.... where is it hiding?

I've looked for an informative video on how to bleed the brakes on a Fiat 124 spider, but couldn't locate any.

Fiatcatapult,

Lots of threads here on the forum discussing how to bleed your brakes.

Kirk,

I appreciate it... I guess I need to remove the tires to access it from the front.. can't see it from the rear.

I can bleed my brakes with the car sitting on the ground, with wheels installed. I use a 5/16 box end wrench and a hand vacuum tool (about $35 at most auto parts stores). You have to work blind, but once you know what the parts look like and what tools you need, you can do the whole car in about 30 to 45 minutes.

Be mindful that you have to have the rear axle on the ground or supported to keep the brake proportioning valve open or the rear brakes won't bleed. The Spider has to be one of the easiest cars I have worked on in decades to bleed. Although my preference is to use a vacuum bleeder the Spider gravity bleeds almost by itself once you understand it and ensure that none of the brake lines are plugged.

Don't be ham fisted with the bleeders as the aluminum calipers are not as forgiving as the cast iron ones and easier to strip.

Here is a picture of the right front caliper. The bleeders are right next to the brake line on top of them all just like this one. Be sure to replace any of the rubber bleeder caps that are missing.
