PA&SM in Tucson - 15 April 2017 Links to Even MORE Photos

The Fun Italian Automobiles of Tucson (F.I.A.T.) has coordinated with the Pima Air & Space Museum to gain access to their outdoor collection for a photoshoot in the early hours (7-9 AM) of Saturday 15 April 2017. This is a rare chance to get your Spider up close and personal with some fantastic aircraft for some truly unique photos. We have invited several other Arizona-based Italian car clubs to participate. We may have a guest or two with unique and rare non-Italian car(s), too. You can check out a few photos from the last time we did this (2015) by clicking on this link: https://goo.gl/photos/myMQdbGFFwV5RmT98

RSVP is required no later than 5 PM Pacific time 12 April 2017. There is a $20 fee per car required along with signing a "hold harmless" release. If you have questions or are in the area and would like to participate send me email (agavefactor<AT>gmail.com) or PM me through this forum.

SunnySideUp,

That sounds like a blast! Maybe next time, as my wife and I (and our Spider) are retiring to the Tucson area next year. Can't wait!

This may be enough to inspire me to get the car put back together and running.
It would be fun if a group from Phx would make the trek down.

So what happens after 9am. does everyone pack up and go home. It makes it a long drive from phx for just a 2 hour event.

It is certainly incentive to get your car up and running as it is quite an experience to park your car next to or under a classic airplane for that once-in-a-lifetime photo. As for what happens after 9AM, that is tentative. Last time F.I.A.T. was able to do this event we were treated with a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into part of the collection and also provided with a gratis pass to see the static displays that are indoors which include a full-scale model of the Wright Flyer and a real SR-71 Blackbird along with a many other cool planes. I cannot guarantee that would happen again this time. I have inquired as to whether or not we can get that privilege again and am awaiting an answer - again, NO guarantees. However, regular admission is between $9-$16 depending on age and there is a discount for senior/military/veterans. We are planning to grab an early lunch at a nearby burger & beer place that is shabby chic in nature but is really pretty good (11:30/noon-ish) and it is close to I-10.

The day's event is just the photo shoot from 7-9AM. The rest is being played by ear depending on what happens and who can stay around or if they have to leave by a certain time. I myself have to return home by 2PM for another engagement.

There is a lot to do in and around Tucson, so don't feel that the PA&SM is the only thing to do that day. Check out the Titan Missile Museum (a decommissioned ICBM in static display "in the launch tube" - neat to see), Mission San Xavier del Bac, Wildlife Museum, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Miniatures Museum (great if you like tiny models), Tohono Chul Park, Tucson Botanical Gardens, Mt Lemmon Highway (AWESOME in a Spider!); Kitt Peak Observatory (AWESOME in a Spider!) -- just to name a few things to do. Then there is food. It is way to easy to eat yourself stupid here. Tucson is the nation's first UNESCO-designated "World City of Gastronomy." Plenty of food ranging from great food trucks to high-end dining. Downtown is small but thriving. (klweimer - see what you get to look forward too?!)

If you are thinking of coming down from PHX, consider a return trip up AZ-77 to AZ-79 (Oro Valley - Florence - Apache Junction). It is a nice cruise and beats I-10 for scenery.

We have someone driving in from San Diego for this event - and they did so back in 2015, too. I guess they didn't get enough pictures of their car among the planes the first time.

SunnySideUp,

We are totally looking forward to getting down to Tucson! We've done a few of the things you've mentioned already, like the Titan Missile which is really amazing. Does Pima still do bus tours over to the Davis-Monthan boneyard? I did that many years ago.

Ha, ha, I-10, scenery! I know it well, both of my kids went to school in Tucson.
I should know on Saturday if I have a road worthy car, and April is the perfect month to do this.
Earlier in the year this time, isn't it?

Yes! They still offer the tour of the boneyard. It is definitely worth doing. Tickets for that tour are extra and the tour sometimes gets full quickly during November-May time frame due to snowbirds and tourists. I think they do 2 tours of the boneyard per day.

Oh, yes - by a few months. Last time we did this was in July 2015. It got very hot very quick. By 9AM it was well into the 90s F and humidity was high due to monsoon activity the day before. The pictures were worth it but we are making sure we get a somewhat "cooler and drier" experience this time around by having it in April.

We had a great time! Panteras dominated the event and came from as far away as San Diego and Scottsdale. Only 1 FIAT and 1 Alfa Romeo, but had a Ferrari, Cunningham, and a really sharp Cobra. The museum treated us well above any expectations. We were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum's exhibit rehab/fab operations and granted access to the rest of the museum's public displays. After the photo shoot session and tour of the museum we gathered at Brooklyn's Beer & Burger for a great lunch.

Here's a photo album of the event: https://goo.gl/photos/wu8oG2AKbsxcTq1R6 -- check it often over the next few days as participants will be uploading their photos.

Thanks for posting the pictures, I would have really liked to have gone, but between getting the head gasket sorted out and the ignition switch going south, it wasn't in the cards this year.
My Dad flew a B-24 over northern Africa, Romania, and Italy in WW-II, would have been great to get a picture of that, they used to have one out in the yard, but that was years ago.
Maybe next year!
