Windshield Frame Chrome

Postby isleroman » Thu Oct 06, 2016 1:19 pm

I am starting to plan out a complete restomod of my '76 spider and have a question regarding the windshield frame. Is the entire frame, inside (cockpit side) and outside, chromed, or just the outside? The chrome on the outside looks pretty good, but on the inside top edge, where the top fastens and sunvisors mount, it is very pitted and does not look like it was previously chromed. What is the correct finish on this portion of the frame?

I have not owned a 76. On the 79 and later models the inside frame that would face you when sitting in the car is not Chrome on the later models. it is more of a flat grey finish. Should not be overly pitted.

on my 77 the inside frame is chrome or maybe stainless, either way a shiny smooth metal. It was stored for 25 years and when i got it the front of the top had "melted" onto the inside frame. it was covered in greenish oxidation and very pitted, took alot of elbow grease to clean it up, all the green oxidation is gone and the pitting doesnt look so bad from five feet away.

Whatever the original finish, it should clean up well with some steel wool. Most of them ones I've seen are not chrome.

Mine looks exactly as Jagonza described - greenish tint and pitted. I'll try polishing it out. Thanks all for your help!

by the way i found Maguire's aluminium wheel cleaner paste was the best at getting the green oxidation off. Chrome cleaner and Brasso didnt do much, they seem to add shine but not clean.
