Interior Done! (Sort of)

Postby davery » Sat Aug 27, 2016 4:36 pm

I finally have the interior back together. I painted all the plastic, vinyl and leather the same color, rather than 4 shades of tan. I added extra bracing to the drivers upper seat frame. Replaced the kickpanels with speaker holes to unmolested panels. I did my first (an last) veneering on the dash panels. I re-positioned the oil, fuel and temp gauges to the center console and added an analog clock and voltmeter. Still have no tach or headlights, by hey - it's a process! I took it to our local cars and coffee this morning and had a guy come and talk to me about it. It seems he runs the local Concours d'Elegance every year and said he wanted me to bring the car out. I guess I see the car and notice all the minor flaws, but to everyone else it looks pretty good.

I love what you did with the instrument placement. Makes that central section meaningful, not just a decorative waste of space.

Great job!

Thanks. The OEM center dash "wood" pieces were damaged while removing an aftermarket radio. I decided to do something a little different. Im trying to source an 83-85 OEM wood dash set in case I ever want to go back to OEM.

I like how you've extended the wood into the center console. At least from the one picture it looks like you've recessed it into the console rather than just laying on top. I've seen several like this, but none very successful. Yours looks nice.

You didn't ask for opinions, but I think your interior would look much nicer with a more vintage steering wheel.

I go back and forth about going for that vintage look or updated look. I was thinking about maybe adding some of the veneer to the steering wheel. Maybe a few wood trim pieces to the three spokes.

Who needs music when you have this engine? There are no speakers either. If I every decide I need music, I would probably just install an amp in the trunk and connect my phone via Bluetooth. But honestly, I never listen to music while driving this car.

Same here. Have an original cassette, AM/FM and never turn it on.

I only listen to one station every trip. ... I think it's a four trumpet band playing or 40 idf . I just change the revs and the music changes, I guess I make my own music.

We're that way too. Have a sound system in the car -- speakers in the doors, yadda yadda. Put there with great pride by the PO. We NEVER use it. The Spider's Ansa exhaust system is all the music we need. Tympani. Horns. Snare drum. And a high and with sizzle.

When I owned my first spider a million years ago I spent a great deal of time and money putting in (then) top of the line sound system. Twelve inch thumpers and 500 watts. After a HS girl ran into me and totaled it, I bought another one. This one came with an after market unit installed by the PO. Until I took it out last December I probably turned it on 4-5 times in 20 years.
