How to Remove Pine Pitch/Sap?

Postby RRoller123 » Mon Sep 21, 2015 6:33 am

We are camped under the pines here in Plymouth and are plagued with pine pitch/sap that drips from the trees onto everything. Anyone know what the best solvent is for this stuff? I have tried Mineral Spirits but it does nothing. Thanks.

Have you tried the stuff they sell for removing sticker adhesive? Worked nicely on some steel golf club shafts a few years ago.

Don't envy you; lots of surface to clean up....

Years ago, 'bug and tar remover' would disolve pine pitch is an instant. Not certian if they made it inert now.

Thanks all, good ideas, I have a lot of cleaning to do. Fortunately it is on the Camper and our daily drivers, not the Spider, which is still on the Cape for now.

For clothing, Purell hand sanitizer gets pine sap out very effectively.
I don't know what it would do to automotive paint -- but it works on clothing.
It must be the alcohol in the sanitizer that dissolves the sap.

Try WD40 on snow shovels and snowblower chutes. That's a charm!!!

So many "other" uses for WD40...
in 1953, a fledgling company called Rocket Chemical Company and its staff of three set out to create a line of rust-prevention solvents and degreasers for use in the aerospace industry in a small lab in San Diego, California.

It took them 40 attempts to get the water displacing formula worked out. But they obviously got it right, because the original secret formula for WD-40 - which stands for Water Displacement and which was perfected on the 40th try - is still in use today!

I haven't had to clean up tree sap on my spider yet, but I had several globs on the hood of my Highlander that I just could not remove. I finally tried Purell Hand Sanitizer and it worked wonders. Dissolves the sap quickly and allowed me to easily wipe it off. Just try to apply only to the sap, don't leave it on very long, and rinse the area with water immediately so you don't leave alcohol on the paint.
