Missing Wheel Stud

Postby rocky » Fri Jul 24, 2009 6:21 pm

The PO installed wheel studs on the hubs of my '77 and one is now missing from the left front. I took the wheel off and it looks like it may be stripped. Any options besides replacing the whole unit? I torqued the nuts down to 65 ft-lbs. Too much? Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks.

Ralph, thanks for your offer, I really appreciate it, that would be great.

Mark, I think that it is stripped. I'll have to determine which would be the quickest way to fix this.

Since having this car for a month now, this is the only problem that I have had. She starts up every time and will run perfectly for hours on end. The only thing that I have done is replace the timing belt, the alternator belt and the upper radiator hoses. I also did the Brown Wire Surgery (thanks for the procedure, Mike). Every light works, even the side markers.

Thanks to everyone on this board for all of their advice on what to look for and for their generosity.

Mark, I know this is an old thread, but I am researching the best method to fix my rear axle flange problem and found your post. Two bolts wobble in their holes. I would like to repair the damaged threads with helicoils. Do you recommend glueing or cementing the coil into the flange? And, using screw-in studs and nuts instead of wheel bolts?

Thanks.

What size Helicoil?

I bought 12mmx1.25 Helicoil kit, but the helicoil out of the package is bigger than the 12mm stud. Before I started, I wanted someone to confirm that the coil spring tightens up when inserted to fit the 12mm stud? I have not drilled out the whole with the 31/64 drill bit and tapped the new threads to insert the helicoil tool. Wanted to have some comment if I am headed down the right path.
